( – The Devil does not want people to follow Christ, so he tempts them, and this is not old-fashioned rhetoric because “the Devil is here, even in the 21st century” and we must learn “how to fight against Satan,” said Pope Francis during his homily at Mass on Friday in Rome.

Speaking in the chapel of the Vatican guesthouse, St. Martha’s House, where he resides, Pope Francis told the small audience gathered there that just as Jesus Christ was tempted in the desert by Satan, so too is every person in today’s world tempted by the Devil.

“The Devil tempted Jesus many times and Jesus experienced temptation and persecution throughout his lifetime,” said the Pope, as reported by Vatican Radio. “And He warned that whoever wants to follow Jesus must be aware of this reality.”

The Pope went on to talk about how temptations usually grow slowly and often spread to other people, citing gossip as an example.

“We have a temptation that grows; it grows and infects others,” said the Pope. “For example, let’s look at gossip: I’m a bit envious of this or that person and at first I’m just envious inside, and I need to share it and go to another person and say: ‘But have you seen that person?’”

“This is the way gossip works and all of us have been tempted to gossip,” he said. “It’s a daily temptation. And it begins in this way, discreetly, like a trickle of water. It grows by infecting others and in the end it justifies itself.”

“We are all tempted because the law of our spiritual life, our Christian life, is a struggle, a struggle,” said Pope Francis. “That’s because the Prince of this world, Satan, doesn’t want our holiness, he doesn’t want us to follow Christ.”

The Pope continued, “Maybe some of you might say: ‘But Father, how old fashioned you are to speak about the Devil in the 21st century!’ But look out because the devil is present! The devil is here, even in the 21st century! And we mustn’t be naïve, right? We must learn from the Gospel how to fight against Satan.”

  1. Jesus already destroyed the works of the devil and disarmed the powers and principalities. The Good News is “Christ in us, the hope of glory”. If Christ is not in you, you will continue to be tempted and battle the devil. Colo 3:11 says, “Christ is all and in all” if you have ears to hear and eyes to see. The mystery revealed, after being hidden for ages, is Christ is in us, if we have faith of a mustard seed we can move mountains in his name. He sent us out to teach, preach the kingdom of heaven on earth, heal, deliver, set free, and raise the dead. With Christ in us the devil must flee and we are not tempted, but delivered from evil by speaking the Word of God. God’s Will is done, his kingdom comes, on earth as it is in heaven when human beings wake up to the Truth Jesus brought to us: Christ in us is the kingdom of heaven on earth in us; and we have the image, likeness, dominion, power and authority, righteousness and inheritance that Jesus gave us by his death, to rise and ascend with Christ; to be seated with Christ in the heavenly places; as well as Christ in us to speak Life and not death; to give blessings instead of curses. We speak from heaven and mountains must move in Jesus’ name.

When we receive the Living Christ in us, and are baptized by the Holy Spirit and fire as John the Baptist told us, Father God is our Father, not the devil. 1 John 3 says only sons of satan, the prince of the air, sin. “You will know them by their fruit” “You will know my disciples by their love” God the Father’s children, the children of light with Christ Jesus within, are the believers or saints and beloved of God. They have repented, turned from the world, washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb and stand on the holy hill with our Father and Lamb and sing the new song. The devil wants you to believe he still has power, as his children want you to believe he has power. Christ Jesus already defeated him, and each human defeats him when we receive the fire and Holy Spirit to transform us. If the devil tries to tempt us we turn and start worshiping our Father God and the devil flees.

We are not to conform to the world, but be transformed by renewing our mind in Christ Jesus to know the Will of God that is good, acceptable and perfect. God’s Will does not include the devil. “Be ye perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” Jesus prayed so we could be perfectly one with him and his Father. I am sorry, but we are taught in the bible to reject the spirit of error and to be one with the Spirit of Truth. The finished work of the cross of Christ is not being taught; that is the spirit of error. Get the anointing of the Holy Spirit, not listen to worldly spirits. We are all to know our Father now, personally, intimately, without a mediator. The Spirit of God will teach you all truth and the true teachings of Jesus. It is time to step into our God-given destiny as human beings. We are to go direct to God and receive all the fullness of God (Eph 3). We are to be seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Eph 2) not still eating the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come, take the Water of Life without price”. It is free and there is no mediator! Come, for the wedding feast is all ready. Come!

  2. Lovely sentiment. Shame the Roman Communion has dnraifsencised Christmas Catholics by changing the words, and therfore marginalizing full and active participation. What a Christmas gift to those who would seek Christ this Christmas? Gives a new meaning to no room at the inn, as there now is no room for those who seek the succour of a message they can understand. Liturgy should never have to be explained, but now for most it is indecipherable. Church leaders are fulfiling 1 Timothy 1:6-7 Some people have deviated from these and turned to meaningless talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions.
