Yahweh appeared to Abraham in Genesis 12 as a man, telling the already elderly man that he would have innumerable offspring, adding that through him. “all families of the earth will be blessed” (gen. 12:3) Notice that indicated that Abraham was by Yahweh as a man. John reported the same noting that Abraham “saw Jesus’ day” (John 8:56. And Paul tells us point blank that this was “the gospel spoken to Abraham” (Gal 3:8) This last comment about the gospel spoken to Abraham is paramount to the New Testament. Remember how Paul tells the believers at Galatia who were members of the disinherited nations or Gentiles that they were full heirs with believing Jews and they are welcome to the family of God.
Galatians 3 “Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying “In you shall all nations be blessed.” Therefore You who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith…so that in Christ the blessings of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith…for in Christ Jesus you are all Sons of God,through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor Greek, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
In Christ then, Believers are “the Sons of God”. The implications are clear. It comes from and advances the Old Testament idea that humans were meant to be in the family of God. As I pointed out in my previous article related to your destiny you are to become what Adam and Eve originally were – immortal, glorified imagers and managers of God, living in his presence as his children. Consider the following:
John 1:11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
1 John 3:1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
2 Peter 1:2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature.
Luke 20:34 And Jesus said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Romans 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “”Abba,” Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Romans 9:6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.
Ephesians 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.
My point here is to point out though the idea of thinking of the church as being “the body of Christ here I am attempting to exhibit the family metaphor and to the fact that you as a believer are more than just a family member but also that as a child of God you have a job to do which I shall attempt to cover next. Regardless what Love and Opportunity our God has allowed us through Christ Jesus our Lord and what pleasure it will be when we all here “well done good and faithful servant.”
