When I was in my early teens I needed to pick up a new pair of shoes. My Mother drove me to the shoe store only to find all parking slots occupied so she told me to run in and get the shoes and she would drive around the block and pick me up. Not a problem it would seem, until we enter another woman who looked a lot like my Mother and drove the exact model and color of my own Mother’s car. Out I come and I jump into the car and say OK let’s go. I look at this woman, she looks at me and I say you are not my mother and said I’d like to be. I said you would? I then said well I’ll tell my mother that you said you would like to be my mother. I get out the car to see my mother driving up and I jump in the right car this time and tell my mother what happened. She laughed and said “shoot”. But this boy got to thinking hey, now I have two mothers. Upon further reflection I thought wait a minute what about Mother Mary. Whoa now I have three mothers. I am fine with this until along comes Eve. Wait, Eve was the mother of Cain and Able. Cain slew Able but then a new birth comes forth named Seth, the linage of which Jesus would emerge. Could it be there are now four mothers? Then as I progress in the faith I find out that we are brothers and sisters in Christ. Now I am thinking well all my brothers and sisters had to have a mother so are their mothers then my mothers too? Now how many mothers do I have?
I will research this and I began to learn how many mothers there are out there. Updating this to today’s estimated numbers I find there are 321,362,789 people in the United States today and I found that 50.8% of that number are women. So that means there are roughly 160 million mothers or potential mothers out there. Now if 9 out of 10 people profess to believe in God that could mean I have 289 million plus bothers and sisters. Considering the present day birth rate is 1.86 children per woman and since I have never seen a .86% person I proclaim it as two babies per woman and considering every 8 seconds a new baby is born in the US this means were adding one new potential mother every 16 seconds. (See population clock – Population Clock.) Holy buckets more mothers, this has got to make Hallmark and Pro Flowers jump for joy. Now if I am going to go to Sunday dinner at my Mothers then lets see there are 52 Sundays in a year boy I am not going to make these numbers work at all. So I better go to my mothers house everyday of the week so now I am getting to 365 mothers per year and if should live to be ninety that means a whole lot of my mothers will be slighted.
Then I wonder if we are bothers and sisters in Christ then is my Mother really my sister? And what if I should marry a woman that started out to be my wife and then upon pregnancy becomes now another mother but really my sister meaning I have violated law in marrying a sibling? What to say of all this? As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. Broadly we may state the contrast of these relations in two well-known and exceeding precious Old Testament sayings . “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.” “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.” The father pities, the mother comforts, her children. The father in his strength stoops in gracious kindliness to succor them in their need; the mother holds them in a warm, eager embrace to comfort them in their pain. So we come to speak amongst ourselves of the father’s hand, but always of the mother’s arms. The father leads by the hand; the mother soothes and carries in her arms. Jesus did both. Jesus delivers three consecutive parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost (prodigal) son. In them, God is likened to a shepherd and a father. Some of us are shocked to realize, however, that in the middle parable, Jesus likens God to a woman. Should this really surprise, since God made both male and female in his own image? But then we go on to learn that, For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise. Going even further we find this” At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven .
Now I see there is no need to find a multiple of Mothers because God is Spirit and so are we and we do have earthly Mothers to bring us up under the admonition of the Lord to turn us over to His care. I can rest easy now because as I honor all Mothers of earth and I do count you as my Mother and I am proud to be your son as the Son of Wo/man has shown. But there are three that we can bestow special honor, and that is our birth Mother, our spousal Mother, and the Mother of God.
“When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household”
